Ok so it's not technically Wednesday anymore, so shoot me. This one comes with pictures.
In Vietnam we went on a day tour that included a short visit to a silk factory. Here you can see the cocoons and the grown moths:

They keep some moths to reproduce and make more silkworms. The cocoons are what they actually make the silk out of. Here are the racks of cocoons that they use.


Here you can see the workers getting the silk threads off of the cocoons.


And here's a noisy video of the loom, which was apparently fifty or so years old --the yellowish ribbon on the top left is made up of punchcards. To the right of the loom are some (unused) stations for unwinding silk cocoons.
