Manila

I've been spending more time than usual in this city lately.

Really, there are two cities. One is air conditioned. In this city, you take taxis from your high rise office building to your favorite bistro for dinner to your nice house in your residential community. Your maid sweeps your driveway and your cook makes you breakfast.

The other city stays in the shade, as much as possible. This is the city of mangoes and dvds sold on the sidewalk. Of dirty children commanding you to give them money and bicycles with sidecars. This Manila is not going green or worrying about zero-waste initiatives, though they aren't flying either.

The tourist in Manila, unless they came to this country for western restaurant chains or prostitutes, is advised to head off into the more remote parts of the archipelago.
