description of a poster
Last time I sat down to blog I wrote a post complaining about my students, which I thought better of posting.
Last weekend we finished up the rainy season frisbee league with a final day of pool play and a tournament. My team made it out of the B bracket into the A for the tournament, which was nice, and meant we had some nice competitive games on Sunday. Unfortunately the weekend competely wore me out, as frisbee-packed weekends are wont to do. I need another weekend after the weekend to recover and actually relax a bit.
I am finishing my first full quarter here at school, the second one of the year. Kids have exams all this week and then a semester break soon. Also there are town elections coming up, and a teacher seminar, so class time will probably be in short supply for a while. This tends to be more the case than not.
Just for fun, I'm going to describe the poster on the wall in front of me. Actually it's the front page of a large flip chart entitled Facts on Drug Abuse. There is a drawing of a forked road, crowded with students and featuring four roadsigns. The first one, right before the fork, states Say NO to Drugs. Slightly farther on there is a sign pointing to the right fork of the road stating DOPE in slighly spooky letters. Down the right fork, which is lined by blackened, sinister-looking treas with large pills hanging from their branches, is a rock band consisting of various drugs. There is a syringe playing guitar, a bottle of what appears to be poison playing drums of solvent, and two large pills with arms and legs dancing rather aggressively. A marijuana leaf floats above them, singing. There are several kids sitting and listening, not wearing school uniforms, and one of them wearing sunglasses. Just to the right of the band is an ominous figure of the grim reaper, with a graveyard off to the side.
The other fork, which progresses on to the top of the page, is lined with chummy trees. There is a sign which says HOPE in nice letters and also one which, rather inexplicably, states "R.A. 6425". Students happily stroll past an encouraging priest, teacher, policeman, and larger woman who is smiling and pointing at her fingers. Farther up is a "HOPE" bus which has two students hanging out the sides and waving, one looking happy and pointing up, and the other seemingly calling for help. Finally there is a crowd of graduates in caps and gowns, holding out their arms and standing in front of a row of tall buildings with rays of sunshine coming out from behind it.
